Marianne Klaman is a Senior Project Manager at Innventia. She has had many years of experience in the field of media technology. Her career began at STFI, as it was called then, and subsequently went on to GFL, later to become Framkom. In recent years, Marianne’s research work has been involved more and more with digital printing, e.g. Innojet, a current project carrying out research on inkjet techniques. Another project to add to her list of experiences is Digiprint, a regional EU Project, dealing with interdisciplinary research on business models and digital printing techniques. She did her doctor’s degree on colour reproduction and colour prediction in printed media.

Record number of speakers at international media conference

One month before the Advances in Printing and Media Technology Conference was to begin, Beyond met Marianne Klaman, the Conference Director, for an interview when she was in the middle of preparations. Together with her colleagues, Per-Åke Johansson and Eva Petrov, she had been working very intensively so that this year’s Iarigai Conference would be a success.

“It’s important that the seminar programme and the social activities maintain their high quality, so that the conference will be enjoyable and inspiring; and that there will be a good mix of new and established researchers (and research students), together with representatives from the industry. Up to now, we’ve received more than a hundred applications! Considering the recession and the fact that there have been so many restrictions on travelling by companies, this figure has certainly exceeded our expectations,” Marianne says with a big grin.

She continues, “We’ve also received a record number of abstracts this year. As a rule, participants usually get to listen to fifty or so talks, but this year, there will be slightly more than sixty. And it looks like they’ll all maintain the customary high quality.”

In order to guarantee quality, all the abstracts are reviewed by a scientific committee beforehand. The best ones are chosen for presentation. Apart from the more traditional technical matters related to printing, the list of subjects includes, among other things, different techniques for security printing and printed electronics for increasing the traceability of an article or packaging.
High speed inkjet – for productivity and security Fast speeds, security and traceability are the precise focus of the Innojet Project being run by Innventia, together with a consortium consisting of producers of machines and substrates. Innojet will demonstrate the potential of inkjet technology.
The developing of new inks and substrates with specific properties will make possible a printing that guarantees authenticity.

Another focus for Innojet is high speed printing. The printing of individualised messages is fully possible today, but the need for the integration of individualised messages with conventional
printing techniques demands high speed, even with inkjet. With the technology, equipment and substrates that cope with high speed printing, productivity will increase. Marianne goes on, “It’s wonderful that we’ve come so far, so that we’ve got an installation on LINDA. The pilot machine is currently being extended, by installing several print heads to allow increased speeds.”

Interactive materials – our dreams getting bigger

Put the package of soup in the oven to be heated. When the contents are hot enough, the package opens, you take it out and begin eating. Pour a cake mixture onto an intelligent baking tray made of paper and put it in the oven. When the mixture starts to be hot, the paper forms itself into a pre-determined shape around the cake. The possibilities seem endless, when Farvash Razavi talks about her work. At the Scanpack Fair in Göteborg, between 20 and 23 October, the world will get its first...

Biorefinery – now an established concept in the forest industry

The Nordic Wood Biorefinery Conference (NWBC) 2008, held in Stockholm, was a great success. It attracted more than 200 participants from all over the world and met a much longed for need, at a time when the forest industry is looking for new and sustainable business opportunities. The second conference, NWBC 2009, was held in Helsinki on 2 - 4 September with more than 300 participants attending. The ball has been set rolling.
