Interactive materials – our dreams getting bigger

Put the package of soup in the oven to be heated. When the contents are hot enough, the package opens, you take it out and begin eating. Pour a cake mixture onto an intelligent baking tray made of paper and put it in the oven. When the mixture starts to be hot, the paper forms itself into a pre-determined shape around the cake. The possibilities seem endless, when Farvash Razavi talks about her work. At the Scanpack Fair in Göteborg, between 20 and 23 October, the world will get its first glimpse of the Innventia prototypes made from mechano-active materials.

Farvash works with Hjalmar Granberg, a Project Manager at Innventia in a project on interactive materials, financed by RISE Holding AB. Her background includes working with interior and furniture design at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm.

At the moment, she is doing her master’s degree in Experience Design, in which interactive materials play an important part. “One thing that we’re going to show at Scanpack is a shrinking film that reacts to heat, from which we’ve made a selfopening noodle soup package. Another thing is an interactive paper material that reacts in a predetermined way to external stimuli and from which we’ve made a beautiful flower where the petals open.

The possibilities of what can be done with these materials are endless. All that’s needed is a good imagination,” says Farvash. According to Farvash, one way of using the interactive materials would be to apply the properties of the materials to switches for different functions, for example, to verify the authenticity of an item or banknotes, to open packages or to create patterns on wallpaper that only appear in sunlight. Her workroom is full of sketches, drawings, prototypes and models in attractive colours. It is clear that the possibilities that the materials offer inspire the creativity of the designer.

“In my eyes, each material that I work with has its own personality. They represent an expansion of our dreams and, like super-heroes, they have the capacity to assume various properties and undergo transformation.” Farvash’s personal dream is a designstudio in which programmers, researchers and designers work together. “Jointly, we would be able to create really excit- På Scanpack-mässan i Göteborg 20-23 oktober kommer världen att få skåda Innventias prototyper gjorda av mekanoaktiva material.
